Like a Very Modern Man

Like a Very Modern Man follows a man searching for a girl who seems to have disappeared into thin air. He looks for her in the streets, checks the taxis, questions the rain, and even finds himself chasing his own reflection, while the city seems determined to confuse him.

The lyrics move between surreal imagery, irony, and small everyday details. The girl appears to be everywhere and nowhere at once, while he keeps asking if anyone has seen her.

But perhaps the real question isn't where she went. Perhaps he simply failed to notice that she was already leaving.

A playful, slightly surreal story in which looking for someone else gradually becomes a way of confronting yourself.

The words.

Verse 1

Where did my girl go?

She was here five clicks ago

Left a lipstick on the window

And a rumor in the snow

Where did my girl go?

Now the streetlights hum along

If she danced out of the picture

Maybe you were standing wrong

Chorus

Did you see her?

See her?

Slipping through the sound

With a silver little heartbeat

And her heels above the ground

Did you see her?

See her?

Point me where she ran

Or I’ll chase my own reflection

Like a very modern man

Verse 2

Where did my girl go?

Checked the taxis, checked the rain

Asked a statue in the square

But it only knew my name

Where did my girl go?

She’s a spark with perfect timing

Some people call it leaving

Some call it clever lighting

Chorus

Did you see her?

See her?

Cutting through the crowd

Like a headline with no story

Like a prayer said too loud

Did you see her?

See her?

Tell me where she ran

Or I’ll chase my own reflection

Like a very modern man

Bridge

She was laughing in the mirror

She was hiding in the beat

She was waving from the ceiling

With the city at her feet

You can search the velvet ocean

You can interrogate the moon

But some girls leave the party

Before you learn the tune

Final Chorus

Did you see her?

See her?

Slipping through the sound

With a silver little heartbeat

And her heels above the ground

Did you see her?

See her?

Point me where she ran

Or I’ll chase my own reflection

Chase my own reflection

Like a very modern man

Outro

Where did my girl go?

Out beyond the song

Where did my girl go?

You were late all along

BEHIND THE SONG

How it began.

Some songs start with a clear idea. Others come from something that happens in your life. And then there are songs that appear in your mind without any obvious reason.

“Like a Very Modern Man” was one of those.

I was driving to work, on a morning like any other. I wasn't looking for a subject to write about, and I didn't have a particular story in mind. I was simply driving and letting my imagination wander.

I genuinely can't explain what connection my brain made to come up with this story. Somehow, I found myself imagining a man looking for a missing girl, a city full of unlikely clues, and one question that kept coming back: “Where did my girl go?”

The funny thing is that, in my imagination, everything seemed to make sense, even the most absurd details. Lipstick on a window, a statue being questioned in a square, a girl slipping through the music.

Those images gradually became a song about a man searching for someone, perhaps without realising that he's mostly chasing himself.

There's no personal incident behind the story, and I didn't start out with a particular message I wanted to communicate. It simply came from a moment when my imagination took a completely unexpected direction while I carried on driving to work.

And maybe that's what I like most about this song: I still can't really explain where the idea came from.

Keep listening.
