MY OWN SKIN

“MY OWN SKIN” is an electropop/dance track about a painful encounter: seeing someone you once loved holding hands with somebody new.

The music keeps playing, people are dancing, and everything around you seems perfectly normal. Inside, it's a different story. Jealousy, disappointment, anger, and that sudden feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself all come crashing in.

The protagonist could confront the other person, demand answers, or make a scene. Instead, he chooses to keep dancing, even though he's hurting.

Not because he's already moved on, but because he's realised that no relationship should ever cost him his sense of self.

A song about personal dignity, the pain of separation, and choosing not to lose yourself over someone who has already taken a different path.

The words.

Verse 1

I saw your fingers lock with someone new

Across the crowded room, the bass cut through

I forced a smile, I held my drink too tight

Trying to swallow down the sudden bite

The rhythm hit me like a physical punch

I tasted glass but didn’t say too much

I could have screamed, I could have made a scene

But I just watched you through the smoke machine

Pre-Chorus

I am not here to beg for one last dance

I am not here to give a ghost a chance

You chose the shortcut, I will choose the highway

I am not breaking for you anyway

Chorus

I keep on moving while my chest is heavy

I keep on breathing though my lungs aren’t ready

Go ahead and hold somebody new

I am not losing my own skin for you

I dance right through the wreckage in my mind

Into the dark where you are hard to find

Go write your fiction, call it true

I am not losing my own skin for you

Drop

Still moving

bassline driving

still breathing

sweat and crying

I am not losing myself for you

turn it up

Synth Solo

Verse 2

I used to live around your shifting mood

Like I had something left to prove

I gave you poetry, you gave me stone

And left me standing in the crowd alone

Now every passing face feels sharp and cold

I feel the bruising but I’m letting go

Not for your drama, not to make you see

I am done renting out my sanity

Bridge

Maybe tomorrow I will miss your ghost

Maybe the quiet hours will hurt the most

But look at me tonight, I found my lane

I am leaving with my name still in my name

Final Chorus

I keep on moving while my chest is heavy

I keep on breathing though my lungs aren’t ready

Go ahead and hold somebody new

I am not losing my own skin for you

I dance right through the wreckage in my mind

Into the dark where you are hard to find

Go write your fiction, call it true

I am not losing my own skin for you

Outro

Still moving

let the bass take over

still breathing

now that I am sober

My name still in my name

yeah, my name still in my name

BEHIND THE SONG

How it began.

“MY OWN SKIN” begins with a situation that's easy to imagine: unexpectedly coming face to face with someone who used to be part of your life, only to see them with somebody else.

What interested me most was what happens in the next few seconds. That moment when you try to keep a normal expression while everything inside you suddenly feels out of control.

I pictured the scene in a crowded club. The music is loud, the bass hits you in the chest, and nobody seems to notice what the main character is going through.

He could react in all kinds of ways. He could shout, demand explanations, or try to draw attention to himself. But he decides not to.

For me, that decision is the heart of the song.

Keeping on dancing doesn't mean he doesn't care. In fact, the lyrics make it clear just how much he's hurting. It means refusing to let that pain make every decision for him.

I wanted music to play an essential role in the story. The bass isn't just part of the rhythm. It becomes something to hold on to, a way of keeping himself moving when stopping would be much easier.

Even the ending is deliberately imperfect. The protagonist admits that he may still miss the other person tomorrow, and that the silence might hurt even more than the music.

He hasn't solved everything in one night. He's simply decided not to lose his identity.

That's what the title means to me: I can lose a relationship, I can suffer, and I can even feel lost, but I don't want to lose myself.

Keep listening.
