Fermi alle Tre

It's three in the morning. The city is still lit up, the streets seem endless, and two people keep postponing the moment they have to say goodbye.

“Fermi alle tre” (Frozen at Three) captures one of those situations where something very small changes everything. A hand brushing against an arm, a glance that suddenly feels different, a smile suggesting that both people already understand what's happening.

The music is loud, time keeps passing, and neither seems particularly eager to go home.

We don't know who they are, how long they've known each other, or what will happen next. We simply meet them there, at three in the morning, just as something between them begins to change.

The words.

Intro

Tre di notte ancora qui

Strofa 1

Le luci fanno strani giri

sui vetri dei palazzi

questa strada non finisce

se restiamo dove siamo

Tu mi sfiori piano il braccio

come fosse normale

ma da quando mi hai guardato

niente è più uguale

Pre-Ritornello

Non andare via

resta ancora un po’

questa notte gira

più veloce di noi

Ritornello

Fermi alle tre

mentre il mondo va

noi dentro al suono

senza dire basta

Fermi alle tre

senza più perché

questa notte resta

se rimani con me

Post-Ritornello

Eh eh

fermi alle tre

Eh eh

ancora qui

Strofa 2

Il basso entra nello stomaco

e cancella tutto

non ricordo cosa c’era

prima di questo punto

Tu sorridi come se

già sapessi tutto

che domani non conta

se adesso è giusto

Pre-Ritornello

Non serve parlare

lo senti anche tu

questa notte brucia

non torna più

Ritornello

Fermi alle tre

mentre il mondo va

noi dentro al suono

senza dire basta

Fermi alle tre

senza più perché

questa notte resta

se rimani con me

Bridge

E gira senza fermarsi

ci prende senza avvisare

Se resti non chiedo altro

solo questo momento che vale tutto

Ritornello finale

Fermi alle tre

dentro questa città

con il cuore veloce

e la pelle che va

Fermi alle tre

anche se finirà

quello che sento

non se ne andrà

BEHIND THE SONG

How it began.

I pictured a city street at three in the morning.

Not an empty city, but one where there's still some movement. Lights reflecting in the windows of buildings, an occasional car passing by, and music still playing somewhere nearby.

In the middle of all this are two people who could simply say goodbye and go home. Instead, they stay.

Nothing particularly dramatic happens. No grand declaration, no cinematic kiss, no promises. Just a hand brushing against an arm almost by accident, and a look that suggests something has changed.

Those few seconds were what interested me most.

Songs often tell us what happens before two people meet, or what happens when a relationship comes to an end. This time, I wanted to stop somewhere in between, when almost nothing has happened yet, but you can already sense that something might.

That's also where the title comes from: “Fermi alle tre”, frozen at three.

The clock keeps ticking, cars keep passing, and music keeps playing. But the two characters seem to remain suspended in the same moment.

And there's one thing I particularly like about this story: we don't know what happens at four.

Maybe they'll say goodbye and never see each other again. Or perhaps that night will turn out to be the beginning of something.

I preferred not to tell that part.

The song ends exactly where I wanted it to remain: in that particular moment, at three in the morning.

Keep listening.
