Radio Up Too Loud

A car travels through small towns in the middle of the night. Rain hits the windscreen, the wipers keep moving, and two people sit side by side, unable to say what is on their minds.

“Radio Up Too Loud” explores a distance that has nothing to do with miles. It's the kind that can grow between two people even when they're sitting just inches apart.

The journey eventually leads to a hotel room, but changing locations doesn't make the conversation they've been avoiding any easier.

The radio, deliberately turned up too loud, fills the uncomfortable silence. Until the moment comes to turn it down.

A story told through restrained gestures, postponed questions, and the difficult decision to finally say what needs to be said.

The words.

Verse 1

Midnight traffic, windows cracked

Your coat is lying in the back

The wipers scrape across the glass

You watch the petrol station pass

I miss the turn we always take

You notice but you let it go

My right hand resting on the gear

Your left one close but never near

Pre-Chorus

One touch and pull away

Two more exits, nothing said

Three words waiting on my tongue

I keep driving further south

Chorus

We're running out of room tonight

Same small towns keep passing by

Turn the radio up too loud

So we don't have to talk this out

Yeah, we're running out of road tonight

With everything we left behind

Verse 2

Room twelve, key still in the door

Your shoes are scattered on the floor

The air conditioner rattles on

You ask me when it all went wrong

I say your name, then lose my nerve

You give a laugh that almost hurts

The bedside clock says half past two

I'm still awake, still facing you

Chorus

We're running out of room tonight

Same small towns keep passing by

Turn the radio up too loud

So we don't have to talk this out

Yeah, we're running out of road tonight

With everything we left behind

Bridge

Say what you came to say

Don't leave it for another day

Sit beside me, tell me straight

Even if we're both too late

Final Chorus

We're running out of room tonight

No point pretending we're all right

Turn the radio down this time

I want to hear what's on your mind

Yeah, we're running out of road tonight

With everything we left behind

Outro

Close to mine

Maybe we should stop this time

Maybe we should stop this time

Maybe we should stop this time

BEHIND THE SONG

How it began.

I wanted to tell a story about two people who still have a lot to say to each other but keep postponing the conversation.

I chose to set the first part of the song inside a car during a late-night journey. There's rain, the sound of windscreen wipers, a coat left on the back seat, and a road passing through one small town after another.

Almost nothing happens. Yet so much is going on.

He misses a turn they both know. She notices but says nothing. Their hands are close enough to touch, yet they remain apart.

I wanted those small details to reveal the state of their relationship without explaining everything that happened before.

And then there's the radio.

I found the idea very familiar: turning up the volume to cover the silence and, more importantly, to avoid a conversation that might change everything.

In the second part, the scene moves to a hotel room. The road and the noise of the car are gone, but the problem hasn't disappeared. If anything, it's become even harder to avoid.

The most important change comes in the final chorus. Until then, the protagonist keeps turning the radio up. This time, he asks for it to be turned down.

It's a small gesture, but it changes the meaning of the entire song.

I deliberately left the outcome unresolved. We don't know whether the conversation will lead to reconciliation or separation. Even the final line, “Maybe we should stop this time”, can mean different things: stopping the car, ending the journey, or perhaps bringing an already troubled relationship to an end.

I wanted to leave that question open.

Because sometimes the hardest part isn't finding the right words. It's finally being willing to hear them.

Keep listening.
